Moving from Denver to Florida is a roughly 1,700 to 2,000-mile trip that trades Colorado’s 4.4% income tax for no state income tax at all, and trades hail-driven insurance bills for hurricane-driven ones. This guide covers what changes in your budget, how the major cities differ, the paperwork Florida expects in your first 30 days, and how to plan the move from the Front Range. Figures were checked in October 2026.

Why People Move From Colorado to Florida
No State Income Tax
Florida does not tax personal income. Colorado charges a flat 4.4%, so a household with $100,000 of Colorado taxable income pays about $4,400 a year that it would not owe in Florida. Florida makes up part of the difference with a 6% state sales tax plus county surtaxes and with property taxes, so the real savings depend on how much you spend and what you own.

Winters Without Snow Shovels
If you are tired of scraping ice off the windshield on I-25, Florida delivers. Winters are mild across most of the state, and South Florida rarely sees frost. The trade is a long, hot, humid summer with near-daily afternoon thunderstorms. Coming from Denver’s dry air, the humidity is the adjustment most newcomers mention first.
Coastline and Outdoor Life
Florida has 1,350 miles of general coastline and 825 miles of sandy beaches, according to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. Hiking and skiing give way to boating, fishing, paddling and the springs of north and central Florida.
A Large, Growing Economy
Florida’s economy is worth about $1.89 trillion, based on federal Bureau of Economic Analysis data cited by the Florida Chamber Foundation. Tourism, healthcare, aerospace, logistics, finance and agriculture are the big employers. Tech is growing too. In 2025, South Florida startups raised $4.13 billion in venture capital across 376 deals, up 49% from 2024, according to eMerge Americas’ 2025 Florida venture capital report.
The Pandemic Rush Has Cooled
Florida is still adding residents, but far fewer Americans are arriving from other states than a few years ago. Net domestic migration averaged roughly 208,000 people a year from 2020 to 2022 and fell to about 22,000 in 2025, according to a demographers’ analysis of Census Bureau data published by WUSF. Home prices have kept climbing anyway, so do not expect bargains.
What Costs More Than You Expect
Homeowners Insurance
Florida has the most expensive homeowners insurance in the country. Insurance.com puts the 2026 average at $8,471 a year, compared with $2,872 nationally. Colorado is no bargain either at $5,511, the third highest in the nation because of hail and wildfire risk. Insurers in Florida price heavily on roof age and storm protection, so get quotes on a specific house before you make an offer.

Flood Insurance
Standard homeowners policies do not cover flooding. If you end up with Citizens Property Insurance, the state-backed insurer, flood coverage becomes mandatory for every policy that includes wind coverage starting January 1, 2027, regardless of home value or flood zone. Homes inside a FEMA high-risk flood zone already need it. See Citizens’ flood requirement schedule for details.
Property Taxes and the Homestead Exemption
If you buy a home and make it your permanent residence by January 1, you can take up to $50,000 off its assessed value through the homestead exemption. File Form DR-501 with your county property appraiser by March 1, as explained in the Florida Department of Revenue’s homestead guide. Homestead status also caps how fast your assessed value can rise in later years.
Voters will decide on a constitutional amendment on November 3, 2026, that would raise the exemption to $150,000 in 2027 and $250,000 in 2028 for non-school property taxes. It needs 60% of the vote to pass, and CBS News Miami reports that buyers who become homeowners after January 1, 2027, would need five years of residency before getting the larger exemption. Check the result before you budget around it.
Hurricane Season and Your Move
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. NOAA marks September 10 as the statistical peak, with a secondary bump in mid-October for the Gulf of Mexico. Tampa Bay felt both Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton within two weeks in fall 2024, so this is a practical concern on both coasts.

- Look up your new address on Florida’s Know Your Zone map before you sign a lease or a contract.
- If your delivery date falls between August and October, keep an eye on National Hurricane Center forecasts the week before and stay in touch with your mover’s dispatcher.
- Keep important documents, medications and valuables with you in the car, not on the truck.
- Stock basic storm supplies in your first week rather than waiting for a forecast, when store shelves empty fast.
Choosing a Florida City
Population figures below are April 1, 2025 estimates from the state’s Office of Economic and Demographic Research. They count city limits only, and every one of these cities sits inside a much larger metro area.
Jacksonville
With 1,032,601 residents, Jacksonville is Florida’s largest city, about 1,677 miles from Denver by road. It is also the largest city by land area in the lower 48 states, so neighborhoods range from beach towns to rural lots. The economy leans on the port, logistics, finance, healthcare and two Navy bases.
Orlando
Orlando has 340,681 residents and is the home of Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando and SeaWorld. The University of Central Florida and a large healthcare sector add jobs well beyond tourism. Being inland means no beach in town and no storm surge, though hurricanes can still bring damaging wind and flooding.

Tampa and St. Petersburg
Tampa (412,684) and St. Petersburg (266,153) face each other across Tampa Bay on the Gulf Coast. The area offers big-city jobs, pro sports and beaches within a short drive. It also took direct hits from storm surge in 2024, so check flood zones and insurance costs house by house.

Miami
The city of Miami has 478,799 residents, while the wider South Florida metro is home to several million more. It is the state’s center for international business, finance and startups, with a bilingual culture and the highest housing and insurance costs on this list.

Tallahassee
Florida’s capital has 205,623 residents and is home to Florida State University and Florida A&M University. State government and the universities drive the job market. North Florida gets real, if short, winters with occasional frost, which some Coloradans appreciate.

Your First 30 Days in Florida: The Paperwork
Florida’s motor vehicle agency, FLHSMV, considers you a resident once you start a job in Florida, enroll a child in public school, register to vote, file for homestead or live in the state for more than six consecutive months. From that point the clock starts.
- Within 10 days: buy Florida auto insurance, then title and register your vehicles. Out-of-state vehicles need a VIN verification, which a county tax collector office, a licensed Florida dealer or a law enforcement officer can complete.
- Within 30 days: trade your Colorado license for a Florida driver license.
- When you get your license: register to vote at the same visit if you like.
- By March 1: file for the homestead exemption if you owned and lived in your home on January 1.
- Before you leave Denver: file a USPS change of address and transfer or cancel Colorado utilities.
Planning the Move From Denver
Transit Time
Driving straight through takes about 29 hours to Jacksonville and 34 hours to Miami. A moving truck takes longer because it loads, travels under federal hours-of-service rules and unloads on scheduled days. On our long-distance moves, delivery happens within 1 to 14 business days from your first available delivery date. Book 4 to 6 weeks ahead for an interstate move.
Timing
Summer is the busiest season for movers and Florida’s hottest, wettest months, and it overlaps the start of hurricane season. Late fall through spring is easier on both ends of the trip. If your timeline is flexible, a winter or early spring move also gets you out of Denver before or after the worst of the snow.
Vetting an Interstate Mover
Any company that moves your household across state lines must be registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Ask for a written estimate and the FMCSA booklet “Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move,” which interstate movers are required to provide. Rocky Movers operates under USDOT 3077926 and gives binding written quotes. Our guide on how to choose a moving company in Denver walks through the full checklist, and FMCSA’s Protect Your Move site lets you look up any mover’s registration.
What to Bring and What to Sell
Interstate moves are generally priced by weight and distance, so every pound you ship to Florida costs money. Snow blowers, heavy winter coats and most ski gear rarely earn their place on the truck. Sell or donate them in Denver. If your Florida home is not ready on arrival, our storage solutions can hold your belongings until it is, and our packing services can handle the boxes for you.
